What a Disaster!!

Last week a water line broke underneath Carlie's classroom!! The pressure was so much that the cement floor buckled up in the middle of the classroom and geysers of water started coming in everywhere including pounds of dirt that quickly turned into mud!! Luckily Carlie was in another classroom at the time (I think that would have been a little traumatizing)!! By the time the school was evacuted the entire school was flooded in 2 inches of water!! School had to be cancelled for a week while they had disaster crews come in to try and clean up the mess. Six days after the disaster this is what Carlie's classroom looked like!
They had to completely gut the room including digging up the cement floor and repouring it!
They had to also tear out the wall and a bathroom that divided Carlie's classroom with the hallway. Her room had the most damage since that is where it all started but the rest of the school was quite a mess too!! All of the cabinets had to be removed from every classroom and sheetrock cut to allow the walls to dry. The carpet is all going to be replaced in the next couple months. This is what Cayden's classroom looked 6 days after the flood! All of the parents were asked to come in the day before school was supposed to resume to try and get the classrooms back in enough of a condition for school to start again. It was still more of a disaster than I expected to find considering that they were planning on starting school the following morning!! Miraculously it was able to all be put back together and the kids went back to school the following day.
This is now Carlie's temporary classroom until possibly December!! Much better than the "shed" out back that they were discussing putting them in (not joking)!!! There is still a lot of work to be done but they couldn't cancel school for months which is what it is going to take to get things back to the way they used to be!

A funny Cayden moment......

Last night at Back to School night Cayden's teacher shared a funny story.....

The kids were all being screened for their vision and no one could find Cayden! They kept saying, "where is Cayden"? When they kept getting no response they started worrying that maybe they had left him at recess! So one last time they called out his name. In the middle of the crowd Cayden finally raises his hand and says "I am right here, I was just seeing if you knew who I was"!!

Needless to say, they know who Cayden Gillis is now (and it's only the second day of school)!!!

Back to School!!

Cayden's 1st day of Kindergarten!!!

Today was Cayden's first day of Kindergarten!! He has been so excited to finally get to go to school! He has afternoon kindergarten, (not by choice) so it was a long morning for him:)
He was so excited to get his very own desk! When we went and met his teacher last week the first thing he said when he sat in his desk is "this is perfect"!! It is a smaller desk than normal (just right for the kindergartners):)

Carlie's 1st day of 3rd grade!!

Today is Carlie's first day of 3rd grade!!! She is so excited to have Miss Lilly again (her 1st grade teacher)!! She was also happy to have several of her friends in the same class again too:)

Red Fireballs

Today was Cayden's first soccer game for the Fall Season!! He has been so excited and has told anyone and everyone who would listen for the past couple of days:) He plays with a group of boys the same age from the neighborhood that he has played with for the past few years. Lance was hoping they would name the team the "Utes" since the jersey's are red but he never had a chance:) The boys all love Mario so Red Fireballs won!!

99 Years

My Great-Grandma turned 99 years old today!! This picture was taken a couple of weeks ago while my parents were back in Indiana for an early birthday celebration. She is famous (at least in my family) for her Santa sugar cookies she would make at Christmas! A tradition I grew up with and now I get to carry on!! Some of my neighbors have been lucky enough to have sugar cookies that I have made using her recipe:)
Carlie's first visit to Indiana in the summer of 2003 (she was around 6 months old)
Carlie's 2nd visit and Cayden's 1 and only during the summer of 2007
(Cayden was 1 yrs. old and Carlie was 4 yrs. old)

I am glad I have these pictures so my kids can remember their Great-Great Grandma!!

Liquigas

Ted King from the Liquigas Team and Lance

Lance got to ride with the Liquigas team from the Tour of Utah (they also raced in the Tour de France)!! The Tour of Utah finished this last weekend so tonight they arranged to be at the grand opening of the new Infinite Cycles shop and ride with the Infinite Cycles team. Lance had a great time getting to ride with the pros and was able to learn a lot from riding with them!!

The boys enjoying their treats before the excitement begins.....
The 1st and 2nd place cyclists. Levi Leipheimer (USA) took 1st place overall for the Tour of Utah 2011 (second year in a row)!!
The boys had the best seats on the mountain!!
This was the second year we have gone up Little Cottonwood Canyon to watch the final leg of the Tour of Utah!! This year we went with some friends which made it even more fun:) The kids think it is so fun and we have front row seats to the action:) So much more fun in person than watching on T.V.!!!

Santa in July

We went shopping today and got a huge surprise when we walked into the ice cream shop only to find Santa Claus sitting in the corner, not just any Santa but the "real" one!!! He is the same one who has come for years to the family Italian Christmas party!! Of course he remembered the kids, (why wouldn't he since he is the real Santa):) He took time out of his busy schedule to come and help collect food for the local Food Bank since they struggle so much during this time of year!! They were trading food donations for ice cream, the kids thought that was great:)

Days of 47 Parade

We got up bright and early to go to the Days of 47 Parade for the 1st time!! We have always watched it on television but I thought now that my kids are older it would be fun to actually be there!! We went with my mother-in-law and Aunt Marjie.
Carlie was so excited to see President Monson (the LDS Prophet) in person for the 1st time! It is so sad that it is so dangerous for him to be in public! You could barely see him through the heavily tinted windows!! The prophet used to be able to ride in a wagon or convertible so you could actually see them. No one else in the parade had anywhere near the security that he did. Carlie was still excited:)
Cayden's favorite float:) Were you really that surprised??
This would have been Lance's favorite if he didn't have to work:(
Carlie's favorite:) She says she is going to be a Pet Doctor when she grows up!! Maybe she can go work for Aunt Rachel!!
The weather couldn't have been better!! It was cloudy most of the time and even rained a couple times. Kept it from being the usual "hottest day in July" which we were happy about!!
It was so much fun, we can't wait for next year!! Anyone is welcome to join us:) Same time, same place (2nd E., 2nd S.), the perfect spot!!
